There's a certain type of builder who loves chasing the next big thing. A few years back, that meant Ford's EcoBoost V6 family was showing up in all kinds of unexpected places — Jeeps, S10s, classic Mustangs, you name it. The promise was real: modern fuel injection, impressive factory power numbers, and the novelty factor of putting something unexpected under the hood. For a hot minute, it felt like the LS might actually have some serious competition in the swap game.
That moment has largely passed.
Head over to any major swap forum, cruise a regional car show, or scroll through build threads on social media right now and you'll notice something: the LS is back on top, and it never really left. What's more interesting is why builders who wandered off to experiment with EcoBoost, Coyote, and other modern platforms are quietly returning to the tried-and-true small-block GM formula. Spoiler: it's not just nostalgia.
The Allure of "Something Different" — And Why It Wore Off Fast
Let's be honest about what drove the alternative swap trend in the first place. The LS swap had become so common — so expected — that some builders genuinely wanted to stand out. Dropping a turbocharged EcoBoost into a classic truck or a third-gen Camaro felt rebellious, creative, and technically impressive. And it was. Nobody's taking that away.
But creative doesn't always mean practical, and that's where the cracks started showing.
Mike Trujillo, a builder out of Phoenix who runs a small custom shop, tried an EcoBoost swap in a '72 Chevy C10 around 2022. "The power was there, no doubt," he told us. "But everything else was a nightmare. The ECU wanted to talk to systems that didn't exist in a 50-year-old truck. The wiring was like defusing a bomb. And when something went wrong, the parts weren't exactly falling off the shelf at the local auto parts store."
He finished the truck, sold it, and his next three builds were all LS swaps. "I'm not saying it can't be done," he added. "I'm saying it cost me twice as much and twice as long as any LS build I've ever done."
That experience isn't unique. It's practically a genre of forum post at this point.
The Parts Availability Problem Nobody Warns You About
Here's the thing about modern engine platforms that the YouTube build videos tend to gloss over: they're modern. That sounds obvious, but what it actually means is that the aftermarket support — the stuff that makes a swap livable — is still catching up.
With an LS, you're pulling from decades of accumulated knowledge and hardware. Engine mounts? There are a dozen options for almost any chassis you can think of. Standalone harness? Multiple companies have plug-and-play solutions that work right out of the box. Need a specific intake manifold, cam, or set of heads? The selection is staggering, and prices are competitive because so many manufacturers are fighting for the same customer.
Now try to source a purpose-built standalone harness for an EcoBoost going into a non-Ford application. Or find bolt-on motor mounts for your specific chassis. You're either paying a premium for limited specialty parts or you're fabricating everything from scratch. For experienced builders, that's doable. For anyone trying to build on a reasonable budget and timeline, it's a wall.
Dan Kowalski, who builds out of his garage in rural Wisconsin, put it plainly: "I priced out an EcoBoost swap for my '85 Monte Carlo. By the time I accounted for the custom everything — mounts, cooling, wiring, intercooler routing — I was looking at more money than a built LS with a cam and heads. And at the end of it, I'd have a car nobody could work on but me."
He went LS. He always knew he would.
The Cost Equation Still Doesn't Lie
The junkyard LS remains one of the most absurd performance bargains in American automotive history. A pulled 5.3 from a Silverado or Tahoe with under 150,000 miles can still be had for $400–$800 at a pick-and-pull yard in most parts of the country. That engine, in stock form, is making 300-plus horsepower and has a known, well-documented rebuild path when the time comes.
Compare that to sourcing a used EcoBoost for a swap application. You're often pulling from a wrecked vehicle with less certainty about the engine's health, and the platforms haven't been in circulation long enough for the used market to be as deep or as cheap. That gap matters when you're trying to build something real on a real budget.
The LS also wins on the long tail of ownership costs. Routine maintenance, rebuild parts, machine shop familiarity — all of it favors the platform that's been around since 1997 and has been in everything from grocery-getter trucks to Corvettes to NASCAR stock cars. Your local machine shop has bored more LS blocks than they can count. That familiarity translates directly into faster turnaround and lower labor costs.
Culture Has a Pull, Too
It would be incomplete to talk about this shift without acknowledging the cultural dimension. The LS swap scene has its own identity — one that's deeply tied to American hot rodding tradition, truck culture, and the kind of grassroots performance that feels accessible rather than exclusionary.
There's a reason LSX Everything exists. There's a reason swap meets and car shows still have more LS-powered builds than anything else. It's not just inertia. It's community. It's the fact that when you're stuck at 11pm trying to figure out why your coolant temp sensor is reading wrong, there are ten forum threads and three YouTube videos that address your exact problem on your exact engine in your exact application.
That kind of ecosystem doesn't grow overnight, and it doesn't disappear just because a newer platform shows up with better factory numbers on a spec sheet.
So Where Does That Leave the Alternatives?
None of this is meant to be a takedown of EcoBoost or Coyote swaps. Those engines are genuinely impressive pieces of engineering, and in the right hands, they make for memorable builds. But they serve a different builder — one who has the time, resources, and technical depth to work through the challenges that come with a platform the aftermarket hasn't fully embraced yet.
For the majority of builders in this country who want proven performance, an accessible parts supply, and a build process that doesn't require reinventing the wheel at every step, the LS still wins. That's not a trend. That's just the reality of where the ecosystem stands in 2025.
The comeback narrative is a little misleading, actually. The LS never really went anywhere. A few builders looked over the fence, liked what they saw, and jumped. Most of them climbed back over. The smart ones are laughing about it now.
And they're all running LS.
