Eyes Open at the Yard: A No-BS Field Guide to Evaluating a Used LS Engine
There's a reason so many great LS builds start at the salvage yard. Donor engines pulled from wrecked trucks and totaled SUVs can be legitimate bargains — low miles, solid internals, and a fraction of the cost of a crate motor. But for every diamond in the rough, there are plenty of rocks dressed up to look like one.
Knowing the difference before you hand over cash is a skill. And like most skills, it comes down to knowing what to look for and having the discipline to actually check it rather than letting excitement cloud your judgment.
Do Your Homework Before You Ever Leave the House
The most important inspection happens before you set foot in the yard. Pull the VIN from the donor vehicle listing — most salvage yards list it online — and use it to identify the exact engine. LS engines are not all created equal, and knowing whether you're looking at an LM7 5.3 or an LS2 6.0 changes your evaluation entirely.
Cross-reference the VIN with the RPO codes if you can get them. This tells you the factory displacement, compression ratio, and whether the truck had AFM (Active Fuel Management), which is a consideration for builds where you're planning to delete that system. You also want to know the vehicle's mileage if the yard has it on file — some yards track this, many don't, but it's worth asking.
Bring a printed checklist. Seriously. When you're standing in front of a greasy engine in a loud, distracting salvage yard, it's easy to skip steps. A physical list keeps you methodical.
The Visual Walk-Around: What Your Eyes Tell You First
Before you touch anything, just look. A surprising amount of an engine's story is written on its outside.
Check for external oil leaks. A light film of grime is normal on any used engine. Heavy, caked-on oil buildup around the valve covers, rear main seal area, or oil pan gasket tells you this engine was leaking actively — and possibly running low on oil as a result.
Look at the coolant passages. Pull the radiator cap or overflow tank cap if it's still attached. White crusty buildup around the neck or a milky, chocolate-milk appearance in the coolant is a red flag for a head gasket issue or worse. Brown, murky coolant that smells burned suggests the cooling system was neglected.
Inspect the oil fill cap. Pop it and look inside. You want to see a light tan or amber film on the underside of the cap and the top of the valve cover. A thick, mayonnaise-like white sludge means water got into the oil — often a blown head gasket. Heavy black sludge means the oil was never changed. Neither situation is something you want to inherit.
Check for physical damage. Cracks in the block, bent accessories, broken mounts, smashed sensors — these aren't dealbreakers if you know what you're getting into, but they affect the price you should be willing to pay.
Spin It By Hand and Listen
If the engine is still in the donor vehicle and the yard will allow it, try to spin the engine by hand using a breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt. A healthy engine should turn smoothly with moderate resistance. If it's locked up solid, walk away — seized engines are rarely worth the gamble. If it turns but you feel or hear scraping, grinding, or a pronounced clunking, that's a sign of internal damage.
Some yards have pull-it-yourself sections where you can spend real time with the vehicle. If you can, try to get the engine to crank (even without starting) just to hear whether the starter engages normally and whether there are any alarming sounds from the bottom end.
The Compression Test: Your Best Friend at the Yard
Not every yard will let you run a compression test, but if yours does — and many will if you ask nicely and come prepared — do not skip this step. It's the single most informative test you can run on a used engine.
Bring your own compression tester. Pull all the spark plugs and note their condition as you remove them. Plugs that are oil-fouled, coolant-fouled, or burned unevenly tell a story about individual cylinder health before you even take a reading.
Crank the engine through several revolutions per cylinder and record each reading. On a healthy 5.3 or 6.0 LS, you should see readings in the 150–175 psi range, and critically, the readings should be consistent across all eight cylinders. Variation of more than 10–15 psi between cylinders suggests ring or valve issues. A cylinder reading significantly below the others is a problem that doesn't fix itself.
If you can do a leak-down test as well, even better — it'll tell you whether low compression is coming from rings, valves, or a head gasket.
Red Flags That Should Make You Walk
Some things are just dealbreakers, full stop:
- Scored cylinder walls visible through the bore — rings are gone, rebuild required
- Bent or broken connecting rods (sometimes visible if the oil pan is removed or damaged)
- Heavy bearing knock when cranked — bottom end damage
- Milky oil combined with overheating evidence — almost certainly a head gasket, possibly a cracked head or block
- Fire damage anywhere near the engine — heat warps and weakens things you can't see
- Missing major components with no explanation — why is the intake manifold gone? Why are the heads off? Sometimes there's an innocent reason. Sometimes there isn't.
The Printable Inspection Checklist
Bring this with you. Check each box before you commit:
- VIN confirmed and RPO codes researched
- Mileage verified or estimated
- External oil leaks assessed
- Coolant condition checked (no milky appearance)
- Oil fill cap inspected (no sludge or mayonnaise)
- Block inspected for cracks or physical damage
- Engine rotates freely by hand
- Spark plugs removed and inspected
- Compression test completed (all cylinders within spec)
- No evidence of fire or severe overheating
- All major components accounted for
- Price negotiated based on findings
Negotiate Based on What You Find
Here's something most buyers forget: the inspection isn't just about deciding whether to buy. It's also leverage. If the engine has a minor oil leak or one spark plug that looks questionable, that's real information you can use to negotiate a better price. Yards want to move inventory, and a buyer who clearly knows what they're doing and has documented reasons for a lower offer is taken more seriously than one who just haggles blindly.
Come in informed, come in prepared, and don't let excitement override your checklist. The best LS swap starts with the right engine — and the right engine is the one you actually know what you're buying.
